It has been a very long time since my last publications and expat interviews.</p> <p>For the first Expat Feedback of 2020, I am glad to feature Julian, who is originally from France. He completed Prøve i Dansk 3 exam with Studieskolen Copenhagen, in June 2019.</p> <p>Julian shares in this interview many insights about his personal experience of learning Danish in Denmark, but also the school process and some tips.</p> <p>I sincerely hope that you will enjoy reading it!</p> <p>Thank you Julian !</p> <hr /> <h1>Learning Danish in Denmark</h1> <hr /> <p><strong>About you</strong><br /> My name is Julian and I am from France. It is my 3rd time in Denmark. I arrived in November 2017. So it has been 25 months now. My 2nd time was during summer 2016 when I did a laboratory internship at DTU. Unfortunately, all Danish classes were off so I was frustrated not to learn Danish. My first time was during my childhood. I came to Denmark for almost ten years every summer and I developed an attraction to the country.</p> <div class="page" title="Page 1"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <div id="attachment_1760" style="width: 610px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1760" data-attachment-id="1760" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-julian-france/learn-danish-julian-france/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?fit=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="600,450" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="learn-danish-Julian-France" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?fit=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?fit=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-1760 size-full" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1" alt="Learn Danish - Julian" width="600" height="450" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/learn-danish-Julian-France.png?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px"><p id="caption-attachment-1760" class="wp-caption-text"><em>© </em><a href="https://www.thomasmougeolle.com/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Thomas Mougeolle</em></a></p></div> <p>I used to introduce myself as a Parisian whose origins are mixed. My blood is 3/4 viet and the fourth is Dane. My grandmother was born in Nakskov and she taught me a lot about the Danish culture when I was a child. Thank to her, I celebrated the Danish Christmas and other traditions. But I was really stupid when I was a kid and I did not learn Danish with my grandmother. So when I was around 20, I felt I needed to retrieve my origins. So I decided first to get an Erasmus exchange. But I was refused because my marks were not good enough. So I did an internship in 2016 but that was too short to learn. So I came back in November 2017 as a VIE (special French contract). And I could start Danish in January 2018 at Studieskolen. I now live in Copenhagen near the little Mermaid !</p> </div> </div> </div> <h2>Danish classes</h2> <h3>Which school(s) did you attend?</h3> <p>I’ve followed lessons at <a href="http://www.studieskolen.dk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Studieskolen</a> in Copenhagen<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1115" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-carlos-from-brazil-portugal/studieskolen-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=500%2C150&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="500,150" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="studieskolen" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=300%2C90&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=500%2C150&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-1115 size-medium" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?resize=300%2C90&#038;ssl=1" alt="Studieskolen" width="300" height="90" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?resize=300%2C90&amp;ssl=1 300w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"></p> <h3>How did you find the registering process at the school when you enrolled?</h3> <p>Easy but slow because first you need a CPR.</p> <h3>Did you take breaks?</h3> <p>No. I think when you take a break, you won&#8217;t feel motivated to start again. I have a lot of friends who did that and because of that they don&#8217;t speak Danish. But of course, I feel sometimes unmotivated. So I was like, if I failed an exam, I would stop paying Danish classes. And I was lucky not to fail it.</p> <h3>Day classes vs evening classes?</h3> <p>I did not have any choice because I had a job.</p> <h3>How did you find the various modules at school?</h3> <p>It was really interesting during the 3 first modules. But then since module 4, you start to prepare PD3 so it is less fun.</p> <p><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1308" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/prove-i-dansk-3-preparation-written-exam/pd3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=700%2C430&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="700,430" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="PD3 &amp;#8211; Exam Denmark" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=700%2C430&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-1308" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?resize=450%2C276&#038;ssl=1" alt="PD3 - Exam Denmark" width="450" height="276" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?resize=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px"></p> <h2>Prøve i Dansk 3 Exam</h2> <h3>How was the Prøve i Dansk 3 examination?</h3> <p>It was hard.</p> <h3>Any suggestions in terms of the preparation to PD3?</h3> <p>It is better to study Danish for 2 years instead of 1,5 year as I did. Why I did not study 2 years instead of 1,5? It is just because at one time I was without a job and I was running out of money so I could not know if I could stay 6 more months in Copenhagen.</p> <p>Also, it is nice to be explained all the rules before doing the exam.<br /> For example, I did not know we could bring a dictionary for the written exam.</p> <h3>Any comments regarding written exam and oral exam?</h3> <p>Written exam, check your time. I thought I was okay with the time but in fact I did not finish my conclusion.<br /> Oral exam, take your time before answering. I was afraid to stay silent so I preferred to answer even if it made no sense. That&#8217;s not a good move.</p> <h3>Which study books have you used at school for the various modules?</h3> <p>Danish to Go</p> <h3>What do you think about the books? Would you recommend them?</h3> <p>Yes, it was okay but it is better to have a teacher and classmates with you.<br /> It is almost impossible to learn by yourself. You won&#8217;t feel motivated.</p> <h2>Danish Practice</h2> <h3>Do you think it is easy to apply your Danish (that you learned at school) in the everyday life?</h3> <p>It is not easy because in Copenhagen, Danes notice that you are a foreigner and switch to English. But it is possible.</p> <h3>What do you do outside of school to practice your Danish?</h3> <p>I go to the library and I borrow some comics as Garfield and children books. I organize <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Weekly-French-Danish-language-exchange-meet-up-1911620949144064/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">French Danish Language cafe</a> and English is forbidden. Everything was  organized and went smoothly.</p> <p><b>Any suggestions in terms of the preparation to PD3?</b><br /> Go to every lesson, it’s good to practice your Danish regularly. This was particularly useful for me, because the school was one of the only places where I could practice Danish. This will also be a recommendation for when you learn Danish, really try to use it, this will only help you to improve.</p> <p><b>Any comments, recommendations you would like to share with others</b><br /> I think the exam was fine, but it also helped to practice some previous exams before. This combination makes the whole education.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Danish Practice</strong></p> <p><b>Do you think it is easy to apply your Danish (that you learned at school) in the everyday life?</b><br /> For me it is still hard to really use my Danish, because I need to get over a ‘embarrassment-point’ that I can makes mistakes. It is amazing how many people in Denmark speak very good English, but it isn’t helpful to learn Danish ?</p> <p><b>What do you do outside of school to practice your Danish? </b><br /> After my Prøve i Dansk 3, I started with Studieprøven. There is a chance I will need this for my future study. Apart from that, it is really good to keep up with learning Danish. I notice that I try to follow more Danish news now and try to read more books and articles in Danish.</p> <p><b>Have you read Danish books that you think are worth reading for other students?</b><br /> I would totally recommend to go to the library in your town, sign up for free and make use of this amazing opportunity. Start with reading the easy books in Danish, there are even special books for people to start learning Danish. And try to keep up doing this.</p> <p>In preparation for the Studieprøven exam I read through <a href="https://www.klingbjerg.dk/vare/dansk-basisgrammatik-udlaendinge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dansk basisgrammatik for udlændinge</a> (Anne Hilt, Eva Jensen, Lise Rifbjerg), for me this was very helpful to have a good overview of the grammar.</p> <p><a href="https://www.klingbjerg.dk/vare/dansk-basisgrammatik-udlaendinge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1544" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-vimke-the-netherlands/grammar-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?fit=521%2C255&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="521,255" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="grammar" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?fit=300%2C147&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?fit=521%2C255&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-1544 size-full aligncenter" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?resize=521%2C255&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="521" height="255" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?w=521&amp;ssl=1 521w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/grammar.jpg?resize=300%2C147&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px"></a></p> <p><b>Do you have any tips about how to improve your Danish while studying and being in Denmark?</b><br /> What I have been trying lately is to use my Danish in daily life, even though it is so easy to switch to English. Modules 4 and 5 were more of a struggle, but no less rewarding. As you get to the higher modules, progress is more about using the correct tense for verbs and structuring sentences, rather than learning lots of new words.</p> <p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1308" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/prove-i-dansk-3-preparation-written-exam/pd3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=700%2C430&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="700,430" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="PD3 &amp;#8211; Exam Denmark" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?fit=700%2C430&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-1308" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?resize=450%2C276&#038;ssl=1" alt="PD3 - Exam Denmark" width="450" height="276" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/pd3.jpg?resize=300%2C184&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px"></p> <p><strong>Prøve i Dansk 3 Exam</strong></p> <p><b>How was the Prøve i Dansk 3 examination?</b><br /> Nothing to fear. Nobody likes sitting doing exams for hours, unless they are weird. However, the PD3 exam is straightforward and classes will prepare you for all the questions that can come up.</p> <p><b>Any suggestions in terms of the preparation to PD3?</b><br /> Do as much homework and other things outside of classes as you can. Practice with exams from previous years. I found it very helpful to time myself with previous exams, so you know how much time you will have on the day.</p> <p><b>Would you recommend any resources to help others?</b><br /> Watching the news and reading articles really helped me. You may not understand everything that is going on, but over time you will pick up keywords and get used to words and phrases that are used when it comes to topics like immigration or the environment.</p> <p><b>Did you think the exam was difficult?</b><br /> Not really. Practicing previous exams helps to accustom yourself with working out how the questions are phrased and how to answer them.</p> <p><b>Any comments regarding written exam and oral exam?</b><br /> Written: Read the question and then read it again before starting to answer.</p> <p>Oral: The examiners are not out to trick you. Focus on all the words and phrases that you know and use them when you can and when it is appropriate.</p> <p><b>Any comments, recommendations you would like to share with others</b><br /> Stressing on the day will not help. Take it easy and use what you have been learning for the past couple of years. Don&#8217;t focus on the things you don&#8217;t know. It seems like obvious advice but amazing how many people focus on that.</p> <p><strong>Books at school</strong><br /> Books provided by the school:</p> <p>Module 1-3: <a Practice</strong></p> <p><b>Do you think it is easy to apply your Danish (that you learned at school) in the everyday life?</b><br /> I think that a mixture of pushing yourself in the classes and getting out into the world speaking to real Danes is the best way to apply what you learn in class. I found that in the classes we would learn The Queen&#8217;s Danish. However, that&#8217;s not how most Danes will speak, as they will use slang or phrase their sentences slightly different.</p> <p><b>What do you do outside of school to practice your Danish? </b><br /> Anything that involves reading, listening, writing or speaking Danish. You need to be smart about what you spent your time doing and be interested in the subject matter and not just be reading / watching something because it is in Danish. There is no point in reading everything there is to know about Jørgen Gammelgaard, if you really don&#8217;t care about Danish furniture designs.</p> <p><b>Have you read Danish books that you think are worth reading for other students?</b><br /> Books are a hard thing to recommend when they are in the language that you are trying to learn. I started by reading children&#8217;s books and built up my reading level from there. Children&#8217;s books are generally light-hearted, funny and deal with a massive range of stories, where you will pick up new words that you wouldn&#8217;t from newspapers</p> <div id="attachment_1518" style="width: 410px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1518" data-attachment-id="1518" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-dan-england/childrens-book/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?fit=500%2C496&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="500,496" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Children&amp;#8217;s-Book Learn Danish" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?fit=300%2C298&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?fit=500%2C496&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-1518" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?resize=400%2C397&#038;ssl=1" alt="Children's-Book Learn Danish" width="400" height="397" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?resize=300%2C298&amp;ssl=1 300w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Childrens-Book.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px"><p id="caption-attachment-1518" class="wp-caption-text">© Dan Woolbarn</p></div> <p><b>Have you watched Danish movies / TV series that you think are worth seeing for other students?</b><br /> I really liked &#8216;Borgen&#8217; and &#8216;Broen&#8217;. All we need to do is to be brave.</p> <p>There are many ways to improve Danish, one of those that I like is watching programs from DR. Some of them have subtitles in Danish even though they speaks Danish so I can hear the pronunciation and the way Danes use the expression.</p> <p>I also bought a Danish book called “<a href="https://www.partner-ads.com/dk/klikbanner.php?partnerid=27145&amp;bannerid=43264&amp;htmlurl=https://www.saxo.com/dk/den-lille-bog-om-hygge_meik-wiking_epub_9788740620627" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Den lille bog om Hygge</a>” by Meik Wiking. It is a lovely book with pictures and it is not too difficult to read, moreover it helps me with learning and understanding more about Danish Culture.</p> <div id="attachment_1483" style="width: 328px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1483" data-attachment-id="1483" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-walai-from-thailand/book-danish/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?fit=318%2C387&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="318,387" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="book-danish" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?fit=247%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?fit=318%2C387&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-1483 size-full" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?resize=318%2C387&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="318" height="387" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?w=318&amp;ssl=1 318w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/book-danish.png?resize=247%2C300&amp;ssl=1 247w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px"><p id="caption-attachment-1483" class="wp-caption-text"><em>© Photo by Walai</em></p></div> </div> <div class="page" title="Page 3"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>I hope this would be helpful to everyone who learning Danish and going to take PD3. The counselor at IA was helpful and professional in evaluating my ability in terms of language learning. I contacted IA then. The tiny bit stress part was, you have to do all(or most) of the homework to keep up with the class. And for a person like me, who left school quite a while, that could be a challenge.</p> <p><strong>Prøve i Dansk 3 exam</strong><br /> No need to worry about the preparation to PD3, if you attend Studieskolen. You&#8217;ll get a lot of information and training in the class or as homework.<br /> I&#8217;d recommend to try to read more newspaper like <a href="https://www.dr.dk/nyheder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DR Nyheder</a>. Just find something that you&#8217;re interested in. I also find that some of the documentary of DR are helpful, both for written and oral exam.</p> <p><strong>Do you have any tips to improve in Danish?</strong><br /> If you have a Dane as a partner or friends, try to write them on messenger/emails/whatever in Danish at first.<br /> And Don&#8217;t be afraid to start speaking in Danish in the public! I mean for example, just ordering food or asking a simple question in the store. We all know Danes are really good at English, but just speak Danish to them.<br /> I know it could be frustrated (tell me about it, with an Asian face, Danes will immediate think that I&#8217;m a tourist) that they probably would answer in English or say &#8220;HVAD??&#8221;, don&#8217;t let it get into you. Keep trying! <img src="//s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" loading="lazy"></p> <p>And another suggestion is that watch TV.<br /> I particularly found that cartoon (I watched <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u4bOOTJyFE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;Gurli gris&#8221; aka &#8220;Peppa pig&#8221; (British version)</a> helps a lot. My name is Alexandra, I&#8217;m from Russia.<br /> My major is in translation/interpreting, but I&#8217;m currently exploring other options since Russian is not the most wide-used language in Denmark <img src="//s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" loading="lazy"> Meanwhile I&#8217;m enjoying being a stay-at-home mom in one of the most wonderful cities I&#8217;ve ever been to.<br /> My husband and I moved to Copenhagen two years ago, and a month later I started learning Danish at <a href="http://www.kbh-sprogcenter.dk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Københavns Sprogcenter</a></p> <p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1378" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-alexandra-russia/learn-danish-expat-feedback-alexandra-russia/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?fit=375%2C500&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="375,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Learn Danish &amp;#8211; Expat Feedback Alexandra from Russia" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?fit=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?fit=375%2C500&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-1378 aligncenter" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?resize=375%2C500&#038;ssl=1" alt="Learn Danish - Expat Feedback Alexandra from Russia" width="375" height="500" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?w=375&amp;ssl=1 375w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Learn-Danish-Expat-Feedback-Alexandra-Russia.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px"></p> <p><strong>Danish classes</strong><br /> I enrolled for online classes as I didn&#8217;t have much choice at the time: my classes started in August and my son was born in September, so day/evening classes weren&#8217;t really an option.</p> <p><a href="http://www.kbh-sprogcenter.dk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1379" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-alexandra-russia/kobenhavns-sprog-center-learn-danish/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/k%C3%B8benhavns-sprog-center-learn-danish.png?fit=406%2C55&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="406,55" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="københavns-sprog-center-learn-danish" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/k%C3%B8benhavns-sprog-center-learn-danish.png?fit=300%2C41&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/k%C3%B8benhavns-sprog-center-learn-danish.png?fit=406%2C55&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-1379 aligncenter" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/k%C3%B8benhavns-sprog-center-learn-danish.png?resize=406%2C55&#038;ssl=1" alt=" Skip to main content Skip to toolbar About WordPress Learn Danish 33 Plugin Updates 00 comments awaiting moderation New View Post SEO Security Clear Cache UpdraftPlus Howdy, Béranger Log Out Edit Post Add New Important: You are currently running Social Warfare v3.0.9 and Social Warfare - Pro v3.0.7. Each next module builds on top of what you already know from the previous one, and the topics are pretty down-to-earth and useful in everyday life. Listening was probably the hardest part, but hey, it still is, since real Danish people speak nothing like what any book can teach you.</p> <p><strong>Prøve i Dansk 3 exam</strong><br /> So finally, a couple of weeks ago, I had my Prøve i Dansk 3 examination. What can I say? If you&#8217;ve made it this far, you&#8217;ll be just fine, so don&#8217;t freak out too much <img src="//s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" loading="lazy"><br /> Practicing sure helps, especially with the written part, since the tests are more or less the same every year, you get a chance to see what will be expected from you. So just do every test from previous years you can find. In my case, they were provided by the teacher but I&#8217;m sure it won&#8217;t be too hard to find those online.<br /> As for the oral exam, it turned out to be less stressful than I expected it to be. Everyone was friendly and the questions were limited to the details of what my monologue was about (my topic was about one of the political parties, so the questions were about their views and ideas). Be confident, don&#8217;t go into silence; if you didn&#8217;t quite get the question, ask to repeat it &#8211; it&#8217;s better than answering something completely different or not answering at all.</p> <p><strong>Study Books</strong><br /> Which study books have you used at school for the various modules?</p> <ul> <li>Module 1 &#8211; <a href="https://www.partner-ads.com/dk/klikbanner.php?partnerid=27145&amp;bannerid=43264&amp;htmlurl=https://www.saxo.com/dk/paa-vej-til-dansk-trin-for-trin_lisbet-thorborg-mayanna-j-riis_paperback_9788791909184" target="_blank" rel="noopener">På vej til dansk. After each chapter you basically get one more topic you can more or less freely discuss with the Danes. After my very first class I could already say what my name is, where I come from and what languages I speak.<br /> Further on, when you get to module 3, you get introduced to the unique Danish sense of humor, texts become more sarcastic and way more interesting to discuss.</p> <p><strong>Do you have any tips to improve in Danish?</strong></p> <p>I am afraid I am not the one to ask for tips on practicing Danish in the everyday life, since I&#8217;m still struggling myself. I find it so much easier to switch to English every time I have a conversation. But I&#8217;m working on it, and my son motivates me a lot: after all, I would really like to understand what he&#8217;s saying when he starts going to the all-Danish nursery <img src="//s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" loading="lazy"></p> <p>Good luck with your studies! I have been living in Denmark for a year and a month, but the first 3 months I was here on and off. My girlfriend is Danish, we&#8217;ve been living in France for a bit and decided to move to Copenhagen. I&#8217;m educated as nurse and have 3 years of experience. I will be able to work in a few months when my Danish get at a good level, for now I just started a job as a handicap helper in Copenhagen.</p> <p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1216" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-cecilia-france/cecilia-learn-danish/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Cecilia-learn-danish-e1519221401458.jpg?fit=400%2C500&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="400,500" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Signe Rosenkrands&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;\u0026lt;3&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="Cecilia-learn-danish" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Cecilia-learn-danish-e1519221401458.jpg?fit=240%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Cecilia-learn-danish-e1519221401458.jpg?fit=810%2C1013&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-1216" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Cecilia-learn-danish-e1519221401458.jpg?resize=280%2C350&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="280" height="350"></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>School &#8211; Registering process</strong><br /> I am learning Danish in <a href="http://www.studieskolen.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Studieskolen</a> in Copenhagen. The registering process at the school is really simple, I got invited for an interview, after I applied for the school online. During the interview, they checked my background and my basic understanding of grammar, but nothing complicated. I had 2 breaks in 14 months, each time I just had to notify the school by mail.</p> <p><a href="http://www.studieskolen.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="1115" data-permalink="https://www.learn-danish.com/expat-feedback-carlos-from-brazil-portugal/studieskolen-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=500%2C150&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="500,150" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="studieskolen" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=300%2C90&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?fit=500%2C150&amp;ssl=1" class="aligncenter wp-image-1115 size-medium" src="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?resize=300%2C90&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="300" height="90" srcset="//i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?resize=300%2C90&amp;ssl=1 300w, //i0.wp.com/www.learn-danish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/studieskolen.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px"></a></p> <p><strong>How did you find the various modules at school?</strong><br /> I really liked module 1 and module 2, it was really fun. The focus was on learning everyday vocabulary, making simple sentences, reading and pronunciation.<br /> The modules 3 to 4.1, were the most frustrating for me. Danish has a lot of missing grammar rules, so sometimes I didn&#8217;t understand why the sentences were done a certain way. Also during those modules my understanding of Danish became good enough, but I had a hard time making sentence complete, because of my lack of vocabulary. But from module 4.2, I have been feeling more comfortable. I still have a lot of vocabulary to learn and some grammar rule to clarify, but I can feel I progress every day.<br /> The exams for each module were relatively easy. I think we are well prepared at school.<br /> I&#8217;ve only been to morning classes 9h00-13h00, 3 times a week. And I really like the rhythm. It&#8217;s a bit intense, but at the same time it&#8217;s a good way to keep on learning.</p> <p><strong>Study Books</strong><br /> I think the books are really adapted to the level. Sometimes the topics get a bit boring and repetitive but I guess that is what we need to learn. The grammar exercises are really good and the listening exercises help to understand more and more. I would definitely recommend them as there is a focus (with all of them) on what important to learn regarding to the level you are at.</p> <p><strong>Danish practice</strong><br /> <strong>Do you think it is easy to apply your Danish (that you learned at school) in the everyday life?</strong><br /> I think the Danish we learn at school completely correspond to the Danish that it&#8217;s talked outside as our teacher uses everyday vocabulary with us. I think with time it becomes easier and easier to use it. To keep practicing my Danish, I tried to talk it as much as I can with my girlfriend, friends, family and outside. I&#8217;m read mostly newspaper, and watch <a href="https://www.dr.dk/tv/programmer/alle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DR TV</a>.
